I agree. I have thought that especially for the past couple of decades that they aren’t worth a crap. They always seem to think that the U.S. should do their work because they don’t have the guts to do it
Are you people insane? You think Vladimir Putin invaded Ukraine because we wouldn’t let him join our little NATO club? Is that what you thought the Cold War was about, too? I was in Intel in 1978 when the Russians, with no cause or provocation from us, save for our weakness in the wake of Vietnam and under Jimmy Carter, set up for a stab in the back nuclear attack? And they did the same thing, again, in 1979, believing that we were prime to be taken out (and knowing that someone like Reagan was gonna be elected and we wouldn’t remain impotent forever). Was Stalin simply huffy because we didn’t throw him a party after Hitler killed himself and that’s why he just had to violate all our wartime agreements and grab the entirety of eastern Europe? Was the Cuban Missile Crisis just a snit because we wouldn’t let Krushchev play in any reindeer games? WTF? You don’t have to believe me – read the book “KGB” written, back in 1993, by the #2 and 3 guys in that organization and understand that they were seriously planning a nuclear Pearl Harbor and their attitude hasn’t changed, not since Nicholas I declared himself the arbiter of European affairs in the 1840’s. Putin isn’t reacting to NATO’s strength. He’s reacting to its weakness and our undercutting NATO is NOT gonna fix the problem.
Back in 2017, Trump told Europe that they couldn’t continue to hide behind America and they needed to keep their military obligations under NATO. They ignored him, so, in 2019, he repeated his position, only to get ganged up on by the Left and the Dems and the Media for “alienating our European allies”. And what happened when Europe still dinked around, underspending on their military and letting us carry the load of “mutual defense”? Yeah, Putin launched a bunch of wars and stole land from Georgia and then he did it in Armenia and Azerbaijan and Crimea. And then, having gotten away with that, he invaded Ukraine – and it was a full scale invasion designed to reabsorb Ukraine into the Russian Federation, which is just the Soviet Union with some blush and some lipstick. So, when Trump returned, he again told the Euros to do their sworn duty – and this time, at least, they had to listen because the wolf was at the door. But instead of our retaking the leadership of the organization, we’re gonna pull the rug out from under it? Folks, those Russian “Boomers” I was desperately tracking were crawling around OUR coasts – not France’s or Italy’s. We’re in NATO because it serves OUR purposes, too. If Russia is able to neutralize Europe through the Ukrainian War, we’re gonna be stuck dealing with China on our own – and, in case my friends on the Right, didn’t notice, Russia, China and North Korea just started their own “Tripartite Pact”, just like Hitler and Hirohito and Mussolini did in the 1930’s.
I’m used to the Dems and the Libs and the Left being blind and stupid, but I’m not sure I can deal with it if my own ideological brethren decide to embrace Mutual Assured Stupidity. Russia in NATO? THAT’S what you think will fix this mess? Good grief. What will “fix” the current mess is a whole lot more ATCM’s to Ukraine, along with Patriot batteries and F-16’s, and maybe some A-10’s (which might do stunningly well in that particular conflict). Cluster bombs and, Hell, maybe a JDAM or two might also help. We ought to be encouraging Germany to pull those 3 to 5,000 Leopard 1 tanks out of storage, slap some add’l gear and reactive armor on ’em, and turn ’em over to Zelensky and crew (and if the Latvians and Lithuanians and Estonians would like some, maybe give to them too- the lighter weight of the Leopard 1 may actually work better on the Eastern Front than our Abrams or the British Chieftains, while the Leopard 2’s remain in Western Europe’s inventories in case Vlad gets greedy.
I’m not sure what made Conservatives suddenly get stupid on this issue, but they need to snap out of it. Trump truly did believe he could finesse Putin, the way he did Kim Jong Un from 2016-20, but it ain’t working. He seems to be grasping that, but he doesn’t need to get hamstrung by conservative back pressure. The game is evolving and we need to adapt. Support NATO and send a message to the dude in the Kremlin that he’s gonna have to let go of the Tiger’s tail. He’s not getting Ukraine or the Baltic nations or the eastern third of Poland and Romania, but he can get a bloody nose if he’s not careful.
NATO has been a dirty joke for the last 50 years.

Concur.
Well back in WW2 if they would have listened to Gen Patton we might not have needed NATO.
👍
Both NATO and the UN have been laughing all the way to the bank compliments of US tax payer dollars. We need to stop funding both!
Europe is knee deep in quicksand.
