I think that Cash Jordan has a point, a good point here. If these businesses are built on a lie, or a crime, to begin with (namely, living off of illegal trespassers, into our country)–nothing good will come of it. Only good, honest business will be driven out of business, while crime will flourish. More and more I can now see where it is a good idea to find and deport all of the illegal trespassers, who have come here, so far. This will create more respect for law and order. Already I have noticed far fewer people smoking weed, in this part of Jersey (despite being fully legal for recreational use, now in Jersey), than there was here, only a few years ago. Why? People are going back to work, no longer living on the dole, as they were during the pandemic (under our Democratic Party governor–who I hope we exchange for a Republican, this November, by the way!) And, more illegals are being sent back (or leaving on their own), so people are taking things more seriously now, with less time to goof off getting high. And, that is a good thing (taking things seriously, that is!) It is a change for the better, here in this area. And, removing all of the illegal trespassers can be a good thing, for all of the rest of the country, as well. Why build a legitimate, honest business, on illegitimate, dishonest customers? It will only wreck the whole climate of business, wherever it is allowed.
And another thing, if we keep removing the illegal trespassers (and keep them out), then those businesses that hire them, or depend on them (either as employees or as customers)–will go out of business. And that will be a good thing. After all, they were willing to use them for their benefit, knowing that it was illegal to do so–so that would be their just desserts. Fine them? Jail them? No…just take away all of their low-cost, illegal labor (and most of their illegal customers, too)–and they will be punished by either going out of business–or by having to compete at fair market prices–like everyone else!!! They will learn the stark value of honest business, and no more easy gravy train–or go out of business. And that is a very just punishment, btw. They profited off of other people’s suffering–now let them suffer, as a result. Ice them all, ICE!!!
And I disagree with you, William F., we get fruits & veggies here, in Jersey, from all over the world, we do not need to subsidize Californian agriculture, with under-market-value labor costs. Many of us, even as seniors, can still grow a lot of our own, in our own gardens, renting or owning or not. And, a cheap labor shortage will force farmers to pay more for labor, enticing more of our own young people, to do the work. There is always a way around things, to get things done, for honest business. We will not experience a famine, just because of a shortage of dirt-cheap labor, for agriculture. Prices may rise, slightly, at our grocery stores, but agricultural labor is only a small part of the overall costs of getting agricultural products to our markets. And, having honest, hard-working Americans working for farmers may actually LOWER costs in some cases, rather than having dishonest, transient, illegal trespassers work for farmers. I see the enforcement of the law that ICE is doing, as good for honest business, in America–if bad for bad business–which is a win-win, in my book.
And one more thing: here in central Jersey (somewhat far away from NYC), we have many choices, and many places, to buy produce from. Competition in a free market (without too much govt interference), has brought us an enormous variety, and quantity, of different places to buy fruits, veggies, meats, eggs, etc from. Currently I cook or prepare everything that I eat, and I have several different places to go to, even for organic vegetables, organic oats, organic fruits, etc. The variety is enormous, the quality is good, and there is always enough quantity. This would not exist without the motivation of profit, in heavy, free-market competition, in our great capitalist society. Soon, the people in NYC will find out (if they elect that socialist), when their choices start to disappear–the real value of capitalism, and the real value of profit in a free market (as their govt-mandated markets start to fail)–and the high cost of expanded govt. Quotas don’t work. Price controls don’t work. Govt interference in a free market, doesn’t work. Increased taxation doesn’t work. But, all of those in NYC–will soon discover all of these hard truths–to their detriment (if they foolishly choose to elect that socialist, that is!) Meanwhile, I will still be enjoying the benefits of profit-driven, free-market competition, here in central Jersey–and may even move further west into some place like nearby Pennsylvania, further away from NYC into an even more conservative area–living and enjoying the fruits of the land.
I live in Mexico, am married to a wonderful woman of Mexico and have not been to the states since 2001 and yes, my Spanish is pretty darn good now! Born and raised in Montana/Wyoming. The people here are wonderful (in general) but I can’t say the same about the government. It may have even more corruption than the states do/did(? – not hardly). Course, when I learned from the Bible that it is Satan that selects the politicians, well, that kinda cleared up a lot of questions for me! Go ahead, in your own Bible, read Lucas 4:5-8 and you will see why there are so many wars and so much corruption in ALL human governments and why voting is simply a waste of time.
