As a young man in the seventies I worked in a movie theatre for a whopping 75 cents per hour. Of course this seem appropriate for standing around taking tickets and ushering people to a seat in the dark. This was the minimum wage. I understood then as many don’t seem to realize that these minimum wage jobs are not intended to support a family of four. If you need that type of salary then you need the education and talents to move out of the minimum wage workforce and join the educated and talented workforce that earns higher wages. I can guarantee that higher minimum wages do not provide the support one needs, increased or not. Higher minimum wages only trap people into staying in the job longer than they should. The free market will balance out what the wage should be, rather there is a minimum wage or not. Higher skills deserve and get higher wages. My daughter worked in the food service industry and earned the minimum wage at the time and tips. She realized the same thing I did, get a better education and you earn more money. Working in a minimum wage job is not intended to support your family but is intended to provide an entry level position for a young person starting out to prove they are reliable and a have a work ethic. Someone living at home with his parents and have lower expenses. Minimum wage will work for this person but they need to move ahead and seek better education and better paying jobs.

Many of the employees making these outrageous salaries are lousy WOKE workers who were taught that they don’t have to earn the money they’re making. They’re slow, unmotivated, rude, not too smart, bad attitudes. Their bosses are almost as bad. The companies that hire them are mostly WOKE also. My husband and I haven’t been out to eat in a long time. We normally order to-go if we “eat out” and eat in the comfort of our own home – it’s better company. I hate tipping for lousy service, especially knowing they make way more than they’re worth. There are still some exceptional people but they are far and few between. We’re very generous with their tips.

I bet most waiters in good restaurants are already making close to $20 hour with tips. Have acquaintances who make close to $300 day waiting tables.
……….and now that the restaurants are closing due to the absurdly high minimum wage, they will be on welfare, with zero income. They should make basic economics mandatory in the high school curriculum.

There is an amusement park where I live and every summer they get tons of high school/college kids applying for a job to work there. It’s extra money, but if you are making a living by waiting tables, it’s a different story. They do get tips so instead of getting $120/day, they make $200/day or more. The cost of living is high in DC and it’s all about if the owner is making a profit to his/her liking. People just don’t go out and eat like they use because of cost and I can see why restaurants are closing.

It seems to me Democrats have absolutely no clue about long term planning and consequences. Whatever feels good at the moment they will promise and do. They have no common sense. If you increase minimum wages in restaurants, the companies have to increase prices to cover their earnings. However, people stop going out to eat because they can’t afford it. Then restaurant workers get laid off or the restaurant closes permanently. How can they not see that?
Because liberals (mostly Democrats, nowadays, by the way!) think they can FORCE the issue, by govt law and more govt agency power and bigger govt–instead of by free-market capitalism. In this way, liberals act more like communists, from the old Soviet Union–and how well did THAT work out, anyway? (27 million dead in WWII from incompetent govt military, 1 million dead from incompetent govt nuclear industry at Chernobyl, 1 million dead from incompetent govt mil invasion of Afghanistan, up to 10 million starved to death from incompetent govt farm collectivization during the 1930s, millions more dead during civil war, when commies first tried to take over and rob everybody’s wealth & prosperity that had prev existed under the tears govt, etc…)

Been to D.C. couldn’t afford the restaurants, The people were nasty, they didn’t serve Quality food, Been to california, the people were nasty, sleeping on the sidewalks, the food was awful, the prices were over the moon, gasoline was beyond ridiculous, and even the cost of Air was ridiculous, and I bought my last fuel at yuma, and after a week out there, I returned to Yuma and refueled on my way home, To the United States !
I never plan to go to that lib h#ll-hole, they call CA, ever, nowadays! And I cook & eat a LOT at home, in central NJ, to save money–because eating out costs too much for me, on most days. Plus, it is healthier to do it at home, too.

Greg Foreman, you are right on the money, with your analysis of these failing leftwing liberal socialist policies. The good thing is that those areas which follow them will suffer, and continue to suffer, while areas that follow conservative policies will continue to prosper–until it is so obvious that no one can deny it anymore. And more & more will leave areas of liberal policies, and migrate to areas with conservative policies. Even I am thinking of leaving my home state of NJ, and migrating to nearby PA, which has become somewhat more conservative, lately–partly because houses cost so much less to own in PA–and partly because there is so much more individual freedom in PA, than in Jersey, nowadays. I’m sure that it’s even better further west or south, but I am a cold weather Yankee, and hate the hot weather down South. But most of my friends and acquaintances and relatives from when I was young, have moved out of my hometown, to other states, and left liberal NJ for good. Even though I am now 73 years old–I may soon follow them.

My first job was in a Mom and Pop grocery store. My job duties included: Dusting and cleaning the shelves, restocking and rotating stock, sacking customers groceries and carrying them to their car, if they did not have a car I loaded their groceries in the business station wagon and took the customer to their home and carried their groceries into their house, remove trash from all areas of the store, and mop the floor after closing. The store also traded groceries for fresh produce and eggs. I would have to check the eggs to be sure that there was on a chick in the egg, and wash and set the vegetables out for display. I also had to make sure the inside of the delivery vehicle was clean and wash the outside once a week. For these duties and other things the owner decided I needed to do I was paid $0.50 per hour.
Have you been to a foreign country? I was at the Toronto, Canada airport in 2013. I grabbed a quick bite at the restaurant, touch screen to order and pay, no tip, they just came out with my food.
When I was in Europe, self-checkout in stores and many had touch screens too.
The foreign countries do not have the welfare system like we have, so people must find work to survive. Maybe we need to learn from them.
