Last week, Guatemala President Alejandro Giammattei sat down for an interview with MSBNC, where he joined Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador in blaming President Joe Biden for the escalating border crisis.

“Do you believe the president’s message of compassion about children coming to the United States is making the situation worse or is indirectly encouraging migrants to informally migrate to the U.S.?” the host asked.

“I am nobody to make a judgment here, but I believe that in the first few weeks of the Biden administration, messages were confusing. They were compassionate messages that were understood by people in our country, especially the coyotes, to tell families we’ll take the children,” President Alejandro Giammatei said. “And children can go, and once children are there they will call their parents.”

“And so, those messages were confusing. Not because of the way they were communicated, but because of the way they were translated here,” he continued.

Migrants who flee from El Salvador and Honduras have to travel through Guatemala and Mexico in order to reach the U.S. border. Then, when they reach the U.S., they fall prey to the cartels.

President Giammatei said that he has seen “horrible acts” done by the cartels, such as tossing toddlers over high walls.

“This is not humane behavior,” he said, disagreeing with the Biden administration’s claims of having a “humane” approach to immigration.

“What I can say is that no government, no matter how large or strong, can have that gigantic apparatus that would be required to address 30 or 40,000 people in detention centers and have all of them in a status where they are claiming refuge. As we explained, many of these issues can be corrected, but we have to work together,” he concluded.
