A heartbreaking sight was seen in a Colorado nursing and rehabilitation facility when its residents protested against COVID restrictions, mostly on their wheelchair.

COVID-19 notoriously targeted elderly and immuno-compromised thus nursing home facilities were given stricter protocols.

Yet, due to the long suffering since the pandemic, emotional distress on the elderly has taken its toll.

Greeley’s Fairacres Manor held the protest with several facility residents, mostly on wheelchairs, stood outdoors and held signages that read “Rather die from COVID than loneliness,” “Prisoners in our own home,” etc.

Assistant administrator… Ben Gonzales confessed the residents are not happy with the restrictions, and have been missing holding and hugging their loved ones. He claimed several staff members joined in the demonstration to show support to the residents.

A 75-year old resident and Council President… Sharon Peterson helped organize the protest, saying, “one thing we have to look forward to is a simple hug.”

Gonzales said the staff members and residents alike sent letters of appeal to Gov. Jared Polis’s office and Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment but to no avail. Both staff members and residents begged for more relaxed restrictions and to permit physical contact.

However, Gov. Polis may have been forced to respond to the recent protest. He released a statement that wrote, “We have provided guidance to residential care facilities that allows for that interaction while also keeping residents safe from COVID-19.”

“Restrictions have been in place previously, but residents are now able to visit loved ones both indoors and outdoors,” the statement added, but still with proper infection control practices.

Greeley Tribune reported the facility as the site of COVID-19 outbreak in the onslaught of the pandemic.

We hope our elders are now happy with the immediate result of their protest.
