During an interview on Tuesday morning, CNBC host Jim Cramer called out Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi.

He addressed the House Speaker as “Crazy Nancy” during the TV interview, then posted several tweets defending his words, before ultimately apologizing for using the phrase.

He claimed to have such reverence for the Office that he would never use such an insulting term — right after he just did. The phrase “Crazy Nancy” is frequently used by President Trump himself.

Pelosi was in the interview to discuss the negotiations of a new round of COVID-19 relief legislation. During the interview, Cramer asked Pelosi about a CNN interview she had done days earlier, wherein she had said that she was optimistic about the likelihood of a deal, even as negotiation talks between the Trump administration and the Democrats remain held up.

Here’s how the interview went:

Jim Cramer: “Madam Speaker, I’m listening to you and I, three days you told CNN you were optimistic about a deal.”

Speaker Pelosi: “I am, but”

Cramer: “Really? I mean, I thought I’d take it right off the table right this very minute. You’ve got [White House Chief of Staff] Mark Meadow[s] going and saying he was the skunk at the party. He didn’t really — you know, he’s gotten in the way between you and, I think, [Treasury] Secretary [Steven] Mnuchin. I mean, what deal can we have, Crazy Nancy?”

Cramer: “I’m sorry, I — that was the president. I have such reverence for the office, I would never use that term.”

Pelosi: “But you just did [laughs]. But you just did.”

Cramer: “Oh, come on. You know what I mean,”

Pelosi: “I know what you meant. I do. I do.”

Cramer: “The reverence I have for the office is so great that I think it’s a travesty to ever call— Look, you’re, you’ve spent your whole life in public service.”

As the interview neared the end, Pelosi gave her usual response to the president’s jabs on her: “Anything the president says is a projection of his own insecurities.”

Here’s where you can watch the insult with a few seconds lead-in:

After the interview on Tuesday morning, Cramer apologized on his show, “Mad Money”.

“I made a very stupid comment,” he said. “It was a tongue-in-cheek attempt to make a point about the harsh tone of the negotiations in Washington. But it fell completely flat and I apologize for that. . . . I have an incredible amount of respect for both the speaker and the office she holds.”

Time’s Up is an organization which advocates for harassment-free workplaces for women. Following the interview, the organization denounced the host for using the phrase, by saying in a tweet:

“Whether @JimCramer meant to insult Nancy Pelosi or simply refer to Trump’s disparaging attacks, the harmful effects are the same. We’re calling on journalists to stop circulating sexist labels that betray women’s skills, insights, & lived experiences as leaders.”
