According to the New York Times, President Trump met up with attorney Sidney Powel and General Mike Flynn in the Oval Office to discuss what to do next regarding the 2020 election.
The report states that Powell and Flynn talked to President Trump about potentially deploying the military to conduct a “rerun” of the election in key swing states.
Rudy Giuliani was also present at the meeting via conference call.
According to the New York Times’ report, most of Trump’s advisers opposed the idea. However, Powell accused the other Trump advisers of being “quitters.” At the end of the meeting, it was unclear whether President Trump would go forward with the plan or not.
New York Times White House correspondent Maggie Haberman gave more context on Twitter.
“The meeting got raucous, with various administration members drifting in and out and different people arguing. Powell told others they were quitters, and people briefed on the meeting,” Haberman tweeted.
“Adding to the story, but two people briefed said Flynn was there as well for this meeting,” Haberman said. “During the meeting, the president asked about Flynn’s suggestion of deploying the military, those briefed said.”
“POTUS asked about the possibility of Powell being given security clearances to pursue her theories, per people briefed on the meeting,” she added.
“In the president’s mind, ‘special counsel’ is what DoJ made happen with Mueller, but what was being discussed was Powell working inside the White House – and Trump came very close to hiring her, per multiple people briefed.”
On Friday, Flynn spoke out against Republican Rep. Adam Kinzinger, who slammed him for previous comments he had made.
“No. The military will not be “deployed” to re-run an election,” Kinzinger said as he made it clear he would be surrendering to the Democrats. “It’s time for this to be shut down, and now. Gen. Flynn has lost his moral authority to be taken seriously, and the GOP needs to stand up to it. #RestoreOurGOP
“Flynn later responded, saying, “Study your history and the constitution.”
Kinzinger’s tweet was in response to a comment that Flynn had made during an interview on Friday with Newsmax where he said that President Trump could deploy the military to “rerun” the 2020 election.
“He could order, within the swing states if he wanted to, he could take military capabilities and basically rerun an election each in those states,” Flynn said.
Flynn went on, saying that using the military was “not unprecedented,” adding that people talk about it “like it’s something that we’ve never done.”
“Martial law has been instituted 64 times,” he added. “So I’m not calling for that. We have a constitutional process, and that has to be followed.”
