Over the weekend, a Wall Street Journal op-ed claimed that Jill Biden does not deserve her title or “doctor.” Fox News host Chris Wallace spoke out to her rescue, defending Jill Biden from the “fuss” over her title.
“There has been some criticism recently from conservatives, including some conservatives on Fox News about the fact that First Lady-to-be Jill Biden goes by the title doctor,” said Wallace.
“I wonder what is the Biden’s reaction to that, especially given the fact that so many people over the years — I think of Dr. Henry Kissinger, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King have gone by the title doctor, even though they’re not medical doctors and nobody seems to have made a fuss about that,” he continued.
Meanwhile, another Fox News host, Tucker Carlson, attacked Biden to use the honorific, calling her “illiterate” and attacking her dissertation as “pure nonsense.”
“The whole thing is just incredibly embarrassing and not simply too poor illiterate Jill Biden, but to the college that considered this crap scholarship, embarrassing in fact to our entire system of higher education, to the nation itself,” Carlson said.
Jen Psaki, Joe Biden’s pick for White House press secretary, spoke out to defend Jill as well.
“It’s a bit perplexing to me, and I’m sure to millions of Americans that with thousands of people dying every day of COVID, millions out of work, that anyone would wake up in the morning and decide that the focus they need to have, the way they can contribute to a society that day is to question whether or not Dr. Jill Biden — someone who is still teaching, who has a Ph.D. in education — should be called ‘doctor’ or not,” Psaki said. “Of course, she should. As anyone who works through that challenging process of getting a Ph.D. It’s a ridiculous, sexist and absurd conversation that’s happening a bit in society.”
Last week, Jill Biden had sat down for an interview with late-night television host Stephen Colbert where she defended herself.
“That was such a surprise!” she said, referring to the op-ed. “It was really the tone of it … You know, he called me ‘kiddo.’ One of the things I’m most proud of is my doctorate, I mean, I worked so hard for it.”
