According to The Chicago Tribune, the vehicle owner found his stolen black Chevrolet sedan in Volo early Sunday before confronting the teenagers. The 35-year-old Round Lake Beach man was left with minor injuries, but he was not shot.
The Lake County sheriff’s office reported that the teenagers driving the Chevrolet made it about a mile before the owner, in pursuit of another vehicle, caught up to them when the sedan ran out of gas. A struggle began in a deserted parking lot, where the owner shot both teenagers.
On Sunday, Sgt. Chris Covelli said that detectives were still trying to determine how the 35-year-old man spotted his car in Volo at about 3 am. He had reported his 2012 Chevrolet sedan missing on December 30.
The 35-year-old has not been named because he has not been charged with a crime. He called 911 before he and the two 17-year-olds got into a physical fight, which ended with both teenagers suffering from gunshot wounds.
“The caller was the 35-year-old, dispatchers could hear the physical altercation in the background,” Covelli wrote in an email.
One of the three was armed with a handgun, although the detectives reportedly did not yet know who the gun belonged to and when or why he drew it.
Lake County detectives are still investigating the incident to determine if charges will be filed.
